Why does it seem that Atheists in America seem to have restricted freedom of expression?

Have you ever wondered how Christianity or denominations of Christianity are advertised everywhere but you rarely see an advertisement encouraging atheism or agnostic ideals?

That's because many of the advertisements that do go up are taken down because many religious people say that they are "offended". This question can be answered by simply reviewing what atheism actually is, how society views it, how many religious and political leaders view it, and how the media has misconstrued atheism in the past decade for its own convenience of denying Atheists the right to solicitate their lack of theistic beliefs and infringing upon their First Amendment right.

But that's okay right? I mean, "America is a Christian nation." (Sarah Palin). The media has painted Atheism and atheists in a very negative color. Some are even ignorant enough to say that "Atheism is Devil-worshipping with a pretty name." (Bill O'Reilly)

This brings up arguments regarding the First Amendment, what "freedom of religion" truly means, whether or not America is a "Christian" nation, and what penalties and consequences will and have arisen from denying these fundamental rights.

I hope I made the topic clear enough to understand.

  1. I believe that you made it fairly clear. My question is can you find enough information on this topic to make it into a 5 page paper? I think that most people are against atheism and agnostic ideals because our nation was built on the idea of a group of people being able to practice a different religion away from Europe, and the idea that you have was never explored, which in turn made them unacceptable.

  2. Sound like you made you topic clear enough. I was able to understand it at least. A question you can throw in there could be how did atheism get it's start or where/when did it start? You can then put in the views from way back then and compare them to now. I think you will find enough to make a 5 page, or more, paper out of this.

  4. Just for fun, both Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin were proud atheists. :)

  5. And Victoria, there are over 50 Atheist organizations in America as well as atheist politicians and Fox News always has something against atheism. There are plenty of news articles, magazine articles, books, etc on the subject of denying Atheists their full First Amendment rights on unfit grounds.

  6. I can definitely say that our country is becoming more open-minded all the time. Religion has always been perhaps the most polarizing of all topics. I think that cause people look at as an attack on their personal, spiritual (or lack of) beliefs. I do think it goes both ways tho. Mitt Romney has recently found himself defending Mormonism. Or the recent request by Muslim Students to have a cross removed at their college...which is a Catholic school. Usually discrimination stems from ignorance. Maybe address the question of why people dont know about atheism. Are they scared? Do they truly think that they are devil worshippers?

  7. Your question is straight forward and might lead to a yes or no answer; maybe you would be better off thinking through the impact atheism has on society today and how it has that impact.
